Don't worry, I just finished changing my layout two yesterday. I got really sick of seeing so much red (my desktop is red right now too, which certainly didn't help matters.)
Anyways, to outline a vector with variable thickness, don't use a stroke. Instead, treat the outline layers like another color layer, except they should be dark and the topmost layer. Trace the outlines manually as their own shapes, not as an outline.
If this doesn't make sense, come to IRC and perhaps it'll be easier to explain real-time. :)

Euna~~ I'm glad to see that you've found your way to AP :). It's a rather enjoyable site, though my apologies. I haven't been on AP that much at all lately. I need to get on more =S. I'm doing pretty good, job hunting and doing things around the house for my parents, but good nonetheless. I do hope that you've been good and that life has been treating you well also. ^^ It was great being able to talk to you on IRC and sorry about that =S.
